...update from Martin

Monday 26/10/09 ..2030hrs. Just come from hospital. Jane never made it into the hospice today, some problem with a piece of equipment for the traction.. ie. the hospice haven't got one and the hospital refused (initially) to lend them one... People have now come to their senses and she will be taking the one she's got now with her.. as long as she brings it back.. I know.., Jane was at her wits end and I was beginning to feel the strain.
Jane is still in a lot of pain, MST's and oramorph still on the agenda.. the morphine pump has now been dispensed with as when she asleep there was no one to press the pump. When they change her traction or sheets she needs gas and air as well... good old gas and air. This evening I took her in a double chocolate chip chocolate muffin, cashew nuts, tonic water and bags of aero chocolate balls and got the biggest smile of the evening... it was good to see her smile again.

Fingers crossed we get to the hospice tomorrow as we found out this evening, most of the hospital nursing staff didn't realise she has cancer...

I think the way the hospital treated Jane over the past few days, Martin, should be the subject of a formal complaint. I am absolutely aghast and stunned by the abject incompetence displayed there. The first thing you do is alleviate pain, the second thing is dig up the patient's medical notes and the third thing is get on to the treating specialist. Doesn't sound like any of that was done for hours if not days. Until this episode, I was very impressed with the level of care Jane was given by the specialist. I still am. Her local hospital though has let her, and has let you, down with a resounding bang. I wish you strength, and hope things will be put in place as a matter of urgency, within hours rather than days.

I have to agree with what ADB has said about hospitals. From my own personal experiance the level of care varies even between wards in the same hospital. I have been in one where the staff have done everything they can and more and another where you are put on the list of things to do and if you are lucky it might get done or it may not!
Anyway please give Jane my best wishes and that I am thinking of her.

I have to agree with Guido that you should formally complain. I hope she was able to get into Hospice after that and I hope she is not in so much pain now. Please take care, both of you.

Oh dear Marin, it is almost unbelievable...Like Guido (ADB) I think the way things have gone these last few days realy and truly does deserve to be complained about formally. This kind of care?? wrong word for sure, should NEVER happen...However I can only pray that all goes well today and that she gets into the hospice where I am definatley sure she will get 5* attention and her pain levels will be sorted out and she will be more comfortable, once that happens you can also relax a wee bit.
Thanks for keeping us updated I am so ver grateful
Love Sybil x
